5 Top Tips to Combat Excessive Screen Time

The Screen Time Struggle: Finding Balance for Children’s Mental Health

On the back of Children’s Mental Health Week, we spoke about what is probably one of the biggest issues impacting young people today—but also the elephant in the room: screen time.

We all know it’s a problem. We see it every day—children glued to their devices, scrolling endlessly, playing games for hours, and becoming more disconnected from real-world interactions. But dealing with it? That’s another story. Often, it gets pushed to “later” or feels too difficult to tackle, especially when technology is such a massive part of daily life.

As a parent, I’ve been facing this challenge firsthand. Recently, my child got his first mobile phone, and navigating the boundaries has been tough—especially when so many of his friends have much more freedom online. The pressure to keep up with peers while also ensuring their safety and well-being is real.

But the effects of excessive screen time are too big to ignore.

The Impact of Too Much Screen Time

📉 Reduced Real-Life Social Connections – More screen time means less time spent developing face-to-face communication skills, which are vital for confidence, emotional intelligence, and social well-being.

😟 Increased Anxiety & Comparison – Social media creates an unrealistic highlight reel of people’s lives, leading to self-esteem issues, anxiety, and even depression.

🎮 Screen Time Addiction – The endless dopamine hits from apps, games, and notifications make it hard for children (and adults!) to put their devices down. This can lead to mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and a constant need for stimulation.

🌙 Disrupted Sleep Patterns – Blue light exposure before bed interferes with melatonin production, making it harder for kids to fall asleep and stay asleep, leading to tiredness, irritability, and poor focus.

And let’s be honest—this isn’t just a kids’ issue. Adults struggle too. We check our phones first thing in the morning, scroll before bed, and often feel that nagging urge to “just check one more thing.”

So, what can we actually do to help our children (and ourselves) create a healthier relationship with screens?

The Power of Active Kids & Martial Arts

One of the best ways to reduce screen dependency is to give kids an engaging, real-world activity that provides focus, achievement, and social connection—this is where martial arts shines.

🥋 Martial arts offers structure, discipline, and progress, helping children build confidence and a sense of achievement through real effort, not virtual rewards.

👥 It fosters social connection—kids train together, work on partner drills, and build friendships in a supportive environment, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

💪 It provides a healthy outlet for energy—replacing hours of passive screen time with movement, focus, and physical fitness. Rather than staring at a screen for entertainment, martial arts gives children an active, skill-based hobby that keeps them engaged off the couch and onto the mats.

This isn’t just about cutting screen time; it’s about replacing it with something far more beneficial for their growth and well-being.

5 Top Tips to Combat Excessive Screen Time

1. Set Clear Boundaries & Screen-Free Zones ⏳

Structure is key. Set designated screen-free times and areas in your home—like no screens during meals, before bed, or in bedrooms. Clear rules make it easier for kids to understand limits and develop better habits.

2. Lead by Example 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

If we’re constantly glued to our screens, our kids will see it as the norm. Make an effort to reduce your own screen time, engage in face-to-face conversations, and show that life beyond the screen is fulfilling.

3. Encourage Real-World Activities 🏃‍♂️🥋

The best way to reduce screen dependency? Offer something better. Sports, martial arts, outdoor adventures, creative hobbies—find what excites your child and get them involved in activities that build skills, confidence, and friendships.

4. Use Screen Time as a Privilege, Not a Right 🎮📱

Instead of allowing unlimited access, make screen time something that’s earned—after finishing homework, doing chores, or being active. This creates a mindset where screens aren’t the default go-to activity.

5. Talk About Screen Time & Its Effects 🧠

Instead of simply setting rules, have open conversations about why screen time limits matter. Talk about how excessive screen use affects mental health, sleep, and social skills—helping kids become more aware of their own habits.

🔹 Bonus Tip: Replace bedtime screen time with reading 📖—a small but powerful change that improves sleep and reduces dependency on devices before bed.

Finding Balance—Not Perfection

We’re not saying screens are evil. Technology is an amazing tool for learning, creativity, and staying connected. But balance is key.

As parents, we have to help our children develop healthier relationships with technology while also making sure we’re not falling into the same traps ourselves. It’s a challenge, but one worth tackling.

So, what do you think? How do you manage screen time in your household? Do you have strategies that work? Let’s share ideas and help each other navigate this digital world.
